First Day of WINDS OF DUNE Tour
On Monday, I arrived in New York in early afternoon and had a few uncommited hours to walk around Manhattan, past the Empire State Building down to Times Square, where I sampled the beer at the Heartland Brewery, then had pizza at one of my favorite places, John’s Pizzeria, then I went back to the room and relaxed for the evening by rewatching the new Star Trek movie on hotel TV. Brian’s train came in that evening, and we arranged to meet in the lobby the following morning.
Today’s work started at 5:30 AM. I met Brian along with our Tor publicist and we headed over to a local Manhattan studio to begin our satellite TV interview tour. We completed a constant string of interviews across the country in cities ranging from Greenville (NC), Lexington (KY), Rapid City (SD), Roanoke-Lynchburg (VA), Raleigh-Durham (NC), Richmond (VA), Denver (CO), Wichita (KS), Baltimore (MD), Buffalo (NY) and a national podcast.
During a few hours of downtime, I went off to Starbucks with the laptop and edited a HELLHOLE chapter, then worked out in the hotel gym. After a quick shower, I changed for the evening and then Brian and I went off to the Tor offices for a meeting with the sales staff and a short book-signing for the employees. Tom Doherty (publisher of Tor) and his wife Tanya took us out to dinner with our agent and several other Tor employees. Then it was time to go to the signing at the Union Square Barnes & Noble, the #1 store in the chain.
Walking into the store, we saw our first copies of the book on sale, a very nice display near the entrances, another wall display behind the cash registers, displays by the escalators, and another one up in the signing area.
As the crowds gathered, we autographed copies for store employees, then took the stage to give our talk, answered questions, and then signed books and talked with the fans.
